Frontier Climate Expands Carbon Removal Buying Group with Anthropic’s Participation
Frontier Climate, a group focused on purchasing carbon removal credits and supported by major companies like Stripe, Google, and Shopify, recently announced that Anthropic has officially joined its ranks. As part of this collaboration, Frontier plans to invest $915 million in various carbon removal companies, raising its total commitment to $1.8 billion.
The additional funding aims to enhance Frontier’s focus on purchasing carbon dioxide removal (CDR) solutions while ensuring that these investments support long-term demand for the technology. Anthropic, known for its development of the AI platform Claude, is joining the group during a significant moment as it prepares for a potential initial public offering (IPO) with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Frontier was established in 2022 with the intent to purchase $1 billion in carbon removals by 2030. It plans to enter a growth phase, emphasizing that corporate buyers’ support is crucial for advancing carbon removal technologies to a commercial scale. The organization includes notable members like JPMorgan Chase, H&M, and Salesforce.
Currently, Frontier has over 1.8 million tons of carbon removal contracted across 53 projects, with nearly $698 million tied to these agreements. Since mid-2025, the group has contracted an impressive 463,700 tons of carbon dioxide removal for $169.8 million.
Representatives from Charm Industrial, one of the suppliers, expressed enthusiasm over Anthropic’s participation, especially given that Frontier has already contracted over 112,000 tons of carbon removal from their operations.
As energy demands grow, particularly with the rise of AI, effective carbon removal may help mitigate pollution and its associated costs. With this new funding round, Frontier will strategically focus on purchasing from a smaller group of companies that demonstrate strong potential for large-scale impact, ensuring a solid connection to ongoing demand from compliance markets and government procurement.
Frontier has evaluated more than 500 carbon removal firms since its inception and has initiated commercial agreements for innovative CDR methods, including enhanced rock weathering and waste-to-energy technologies. They aim to prove and expand the scalability of carbon removal solutions, targeting various pathways expected to achieve gigaton-scale removal at competitive prices.
Overall, Frontier Climate’s initiatives signal a robust push towards addressing climate change through innovative technologies and strategic partnerships.
