Itron, a major provider of critical infrastructure equipment, recently announced a cybersecurity breach that affected its computer networks. The company discovered the intrusion on April 13 and took immediate steps to address the situation, ensuring that unauthorized activities were removed.
According to Itron, there have been no signs of further unauthorized access to its systems, and no customer data appears to have been compromised. The company, based in Liberty Lake, Washington, is well-known for its smart-meter devices, which are widely used in the electric, gas, and water sectors.
Itron has partnerships with numerous local governments on smart city initiatives, aiming to enhance energy management using its products. It claims to have contracts with over 7,700 utility providers in 100 countries. Additionally, Itron is collaborating with Cisco to improve internet connectivity for its smart devices.
While the company chose not to disclose specific details about the attack or the systems affected, it stated that operations were not disrupted. Itron expects that its insurance policy will cover a significant part of the costs related to the cyber incident and currently believes it won’t have a serious impact on the company’s overall health.
