Brief Overview:
Best Buy has taken a significant step towards sustainability by installing a solar garden on the roof of one of its stores in New York. This addition complements another solar power generation site located near a distribution center in California. The Long Island City store marks the tech retailer’s first brick-and-mortar location to host a rooftop community solar installation.
In 2020, Best Buy committed to the Climate Pledge, aiming to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040, which is an acceleration from its previous target of 2050. Best Buy is also a founding member of the Race to Zero campaign, launched in 2021.
Key Insights:
These new solar installations enhance Best Buy’s already extensive portfolio, which includes projects in South Carolina, Michigan, California, and Texas. The company aims to reduce its operational carbon emissions by 75% by 2030, using 2009 as a baseline year.
The rooftop solar garden in Long Island City is expected to generate about 461,800 kilowatt hours each year. This energy will be fed into the local grid and will benefit subscribers of a third-party community solar program. Additionally, the solar field near the distribution center in Dinuba, California, is set to produce 5.87 gigawatt hours annually to help power the center and lower its energy costs.
According to Tim Dunn, the head of environmental sustainability at Best Buy, the retailer’s own corporate social responsibility report for fiscal year 2025 indicates a 74% reduction in operational emissions compared to its baseline emissions. Dunn expressed excitement about the company’s progress in curbing carbon emissions within its operations.
The Long Island City solar installation is anticipated to provide enough electricity annually for around 44 homes and businesses, while the Dinuba solar field could power the equivalent of 559 homes.
With these two new sites, Best Buy adds to its five previously announced solar fields, showcasing its commitment to significant carbon reduction targets. According to its FY2025 corporate social responsibility report, Best Buy plans to achieve these goals through energy usage reduction, promoting cleaner energy, and offsetting remaining emissions with verified, permanent, and socially beneficial measures.
